If you are a national of a non-European country and planning to travel to the UK, there's good news for you. You may know the UK government introduced an Electronic Travel Authorisation Scheme to allow eligible country nationals to visit and travel in the UK without a UK visitor visa.
As of 2026, the UK government has introduced a roll-out of the ETA scheme to allow non-Europeans to travel and visit the UK without a visa.
In this blog, we are discussing the ETA scheme 2026 for non-Europeans to enter the UK from its meaning and eligibility to exemptions, and the how-to-apply process. So that your visit to the UK becomes stress-free and straightforward.
Let’s go ahead!
What is the ETA Scheme?
The current ETA scheme, introduced on 27th November, is an electronic travel authorisation system for visitors from a specific list of non-European countries who wish to visit the UK for short stays.
Specially, if you want to travel to the UK and make it to the list of countries mentioned, then you must require an ETA linked to your passport to visit and travel to the UK from 8th January 2026. The ETA is much like travel authorisation programmes like the ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) in the USA.
Having an ETA is a must for you as an eligible traveller, unless you already have a visa or a valid immigration status to enter the UK. The ETA serves as a pre-travel screening tool and helps UK border authorities evaluate your eligibility to enter the country even before you arrive.
Who Needs an ETA?
If you are one of the nationals from countries listed in the Appendix ETA National List, you will need ETA to visit the UK. The Appendix ETA National List is regularly updated, so make sure if your nationality is included before making your UK travel plans.
As of January 2026, the scheme covers a broad range of non-European countries like Australia, Canada, the United States, and many more.
Exemptions to the ETA Scheme
Exemptions to the ETA Scheme
- If you are a British or Irish Citizen.
- If already have a valid visa to enter the UK.
- If you have permanent residency or have immigration status to live, work, or study in the UK.
- If you are a resident of Ireland travelling from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, or the Isle of Man.
- If you have dual citizenship with British or Irish Citizenship.
Benefits of the ETA Scheme
- Better Security: The ETA system allows UK border authorities to electronically pre-screen travellers and, thus, helps identify security risks before the travellers reach the border.
- Consolidated Border Control: When your ETAs are received in advance, border checks become quicker and more effective, and it decreases queues and wait times at airports.
- Fantastic Travel Experience: The ETA application process is fast and convenient and allows you to secure your authorisation electronically without the complications of lengthy visa applications.
How to Apply for an ETA
1. Check Your Eligibility
First, verify whether your nationality is listed in the Appendix ETA National List. You can find it on the official UK government website.
2. Verify Required Information
Before you apply, make sure you have a valid passport, email address and a mode to make a digital payment like a credit card, debit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay.
3. Apply Online or Through the App
Fill out your ETA application on the website of the UK Government or, more conveniently, you can apply with the UK government’s official ETA app.
4. Fill the Application Form
Provide your personal information, and passport details, and answer your travel-related questions. You may also be asked to upload a digital photo of yourself and your passport.
5. Application Fee
Pay a non-refundable fee of £10 for your ETA application.
6. Wait and Get the Decision
Generally, you will receive an email of the decision on your ETA application within three working days after submission.
If your ETA application is approved, you will get an electronic travel authorisation linked to your passport. Your ETA will be valid for two years or until your current passport expires, whichever happens first.
ETA Rollout Phases
- Phase One: This phase was launched in October and nationals from Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates can get ETA after this.
- Phase Two: This phase was started on 27th November, this phase expands to include a broader range of non-European countries, such as the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and many others. From 8th January 2026, it is compulsory to have an ETA to travel and enter the UK if you are one of the nationals from this list of countries and don’t have a UK visa
- Phase Three: This phase is going to start on 5th March 2026 and will involve nationals from the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries, along with Switzerland.
Conclusion
With ETA scheme, an electronic authorisation system is linked to your passport, you get simplified travel procedures, while the UK gets better border security.
However, the scheme may get changes with time. Still, it is made to provide a more efficient and secure travel environment for both travellers and the UK. That’s why getting your ETA before your trip will help ensure a more simplified and less stressful entry into the UK.
