Applying for a British Passport in the UK
A British passport is more than just a travel document; it is the ultimate proof of your nationality and right of abode in the United Kingdom.
Most people apply online because it is cheaper, faster, and easier to track. However, paper applications are still an option for those who prefer them. The standard processing time is approximately 3 weeks, but this can fluctuate during peak travel seasons. This guide covers everything you need to know to navigate the system efficiently.
Eligibility Criteria for a British Passport
Not everyone residing in the UK is eligible for a British passport. You must hold British nationality to apply.
- British Citizenship:You are eligible if you are a British citizen by birth, descent, naturalisation, or registration.
- Naturalised or Registered Citizens: If you recently acquired citizenship, you must wait until you have attended your citizenship ceremony and received your certificate before applying.
- Children: A child under 16 can get a British passport if one or both parents were settled in the UK or British citizens at the time of the child’s birth.
Types of Passport Applications
Selecting the correct application type is the first step to avoid delays.
- First-time Adult Passport: If you've never held a UK passport (or your last one was issued before 1 January 1994), you're applying for your first adult passport. This application is more thorough than renewals and typically requires identity verification through a countersignatory or an interview.
- Child Passport: Children under 16 can hold UK passports valid for five years. Both parents or guardians with parental responsibility must consent to the application.
- Passport Renewal: If your adult passport expires or expiring, you can apply to renew it online or by post. Renewals are processed faster than first-time applications (typically 3 weeks), and both fast-track and premium same-day services are available.
- Lost, Stolen, or Damaged Passport: If your passport has been lost, stolen, or is damaged, you must report it to the police and obtain a crime reference number (for lost or stolen). You'll then apply to replace it, treating it similarly to a renewal but with the additional crime report documentation.
- Overseas Passport Applications: If you're living abroad or travelling and need to apply for a British passport, you must apply through a British embassy or consulate in the country where you're located.
Required Documentation for British Passport
The documents you need depend heavily on the type of application you are making.
Standard documents often include:
- Proof of Citizenship: Your full birth certificate or naturalisation/registration certificate.
- Identity Proof: Your current non-British passport (if you have dual citizenship).
- Previous Passports: Your old British passport for renewals.
