How to Apply for a British Passport: A Step-by-Step Guide
December 12, 2025How to Check Your UK Visa Application Status?

Checking your UK visa application status depends primarily on whether you applied from inside or outside the UK. There is no single "real-time" tracker for every visa type, but you can track progress through the commercial partner you used (TLScontact or VFS Global), via the UKVI online portal, or by contacting UK Visas and Immigration directly.
Most applicants will rely on email notifications for critical updates. However, if the standard processing time has passed, you can actively chase your application using your GWF reference number. Understanding these channels prevents unnecessary panic and ensures you are ready to act as soon as a decision is made.
Introduction to UK Visa Status Tracking
Waiting for a visa decision is often the most stressful part of the immigration process.
Knowing your application status allows you to plan your travel arrangements, book accommodation, arrange time off work, or prepare contingency plans if complications arise.
By understanding the tracking process now, you'll avoid unnecessary stress and stay organised throughout your visa journey.
The UK Home Office, through UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), processes thousands of applications monthly. Depending on where you applied and the visa type, your application may be handled through different channels, each with its own tracking system.
Understanding which system applies to you is the first step towards checking your status effectively.
How to Check Your UK Visa Application Status?
For Applications Made Outside the UK
If you applied for your UK visa whilst overseas and attended a visa application centre, you have several options for checking your application status.
Using the VFS Global Website
VFS Global operates visa application centres worldwide on behalf of the UK Home Office. If you submitted your biometrics at a VFS centre, this method is often the quickest:
- Visit the VFS Global website.
- Select the location where you provided your biometric information (fingerprints and photograph)
- Click on the "Track Your Application" section
- Select "Track your visa application status online" (highlighted in orange)
- Enter your GWF reference number or VAC (Visa Application Centre) reference number
- Enter your surname
- Complete the security verification (confirm you're not a robot)
- Click "Submit" to view your current status
Your status will indicate whether your application is still being processed or if a decision has been made. If a decision is ready, you'll receive information about collection arrangements for your passport.
Using the TLScontact Website
TLScontact is another official visa application centre partner used by UKVI. If you applied through TLScontact:
- Locate your original confirmation email from UK Visas and Immigration
- Click the link in the email and sign into your account on the GOV.UK website
- Enter your password and click "Sign In"
- Navigate to "Provide Documents and Biometrics"
- Click "Continue" to be redirected to your TLScontact account
- Select "Track" to view real-time status updates
- You'll see updates on biometric completion, application receipt at the decision-making centre, and passport collection readiness
Using the UKVI Paid Email Enquiry Service
For a more detailed response about your application progress:
- Visit the UKVI secure payment website at ukvi.mysecurepay.co.uk
- Click "Start" (highlighted in green)
- Select "General Enquiry"
- Complete the online form, clearly stating you're enquiring about your application status
- Mention if the standard processing time has been exceeded
- Proceed to payment (current fee: £2.74)
- Submit your enquiry
You'll typically receive a response within 5 working days (excluding weekends and UK public holidays).
Where to Find Your GWF Reference Number?
Your GWF (Global Web Form) reference number is essential for tracking your UK visa application status. This unique 9-digit code in the format "GWFxxxxxxxxx" was assigned when you submitted your application and acts as your application identifier throughout the process.
Where to locate your GWF reference number:
- Confirmation email from UKVI: Check the email you received when you submitted your application. The GWF number typically appears in the subject line or body of the email.
- Application confirmation letter: If you received a printed confirmation, the GWF reference is clearly displayed at the top.
- Visa application centre receipt: Some visa application centres issue receipts with your GWF number printed on them.
- Email correspondence from UKVI: Any follow-up emails from UK Visas and Immigration will include your reference number for easy identification.
Keep your GWF reference number in a safe place, as you'll need it whenever you contact UKVI or access online tracking portals. If you've lost this number, you can contact UKVI directly, and they can assist you in retrieving it using your personal details.
UK Visa Processing Times by Route

Factors That Can Extend Processing Times

- Your personal circumstances require additional investigation (such as criminal history checks)
- Background security checks are necessary
- Verification of sponsor details is needed
- UKVI receives a high volume of applications
- Your application involves complex circumstances requiring specialist assessment

Step-by-Step Guide to Tracking Your UK Visa Application
Before You Begin: Information You'll Need
Gathering the following information ensures a smooth tracking process:
- GWF reference number (9-digit code starting with GWF)
- Application reference number (16-digit code in format xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx, if applicable)
- Date of birth of the visa applicant
- Passport number used in your application
- Email address registered with your application
- Visa Application Centre location (if applying overseas)
- Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) reference (if you paid the IHS)
Step 1: Check Your Confirmation Email Ensure you have received confirmation that your application and payment were submitted. Note your GWF number.
Step 2: Calculate Your Service Standard Count on the working days (excluding weekends and bank holidays) starting from the day after your biometric appointment.
Step 3: Monitor the Partner Portal Log in to TLScontact or VFS Global regularly if outside the UK. Look for movement from "transferred to DMC" (Decision Making Centre) to "received by DMC."
Step 4: Watch Your Inbox (and Spam Folder). Most decisions are communicated via email. Ensure emails from home office are whitelisted.
Step 5: Contact UKVI. Only contact UKVI if the standard processing time has elapsed. Contacting them earlier usually results in a generic response stating the case is "within service standards."
Conclusion
Tracking your UK visa application requires patience and an understanding of the specific systems used by the Home Office. While the lack of a real-time, detailed tracker can be frustration, knowing where to find your GWF number and which commercial partner portal to check gives you the best visibility possible.
Remember, silence is often normal during the processing window. However, if your application exceeds standard timelines or if you receive a confusing status update, it is vital to seek professional advice.
