Applying for a UK visa from Nigeria requires careful compliance with the rules set by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). Whether you plan to visit, work, or join a family, a successful application depends on accuracy and providing the correct evidence, all in line with the latest guidance from gov.uk.
This guide is structured to simplify the entire application process, from choosing the right visa to understanding current UK visa fees Nigeria.
The United Kingdom offers various visa routes tailored to different purposes of stay. Nigerian nationals must secure a valid visa before travelling, and this must be done by applying through the official gov.uk website and attending an appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) managed by TLS contact.
The preparation stage is vital; gathering the correct UK visa documents Nigeria and understanding the financial obligations will set your application up for success.
Choosing the Right UK Visa
Selecting the correct visa category is the single most important decision. Your choice must precisely match your main reason for travelling to the UK.
Types of UK Visas Available for Nigerians
For Short-Term Stays (Max. 6 Months)
- UK Visitor Visa Nigeria (Standard Visitor Visa): This is for tourism, visiting family or friends, short business trips (like meetings or conferences), or short courses (up to 30 days).
- Marriage Visitor Visa: For those intending to marry or form a civil partnership in the UK, but who will leave soon after.
- Transit Visa: For passing through the UK to another country.
For Long-Term Work, Study, or Family
- Skilled Worker Visa: Allows you to come to or stay in the UK for a specific eligible job with a licenced UK employer. This visa leads to permanent settlement.
- Student Visa: For studying a long-term course at an approved educational institution. You must have a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
- UK Spouse Visa Nigeria (Partner Visa): For joining a British citizen or a person settled in the UK. This is the main route for family settlement.
- Health and Care Worker Visa: A cheaper option for eligible medical and care professionals, as it exempts you from the annual Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).
Step-by-Step UK Visa Application Process from Nigeria
The process to apply for UK visa from Nigeria is largely completed online, followed by a mandatory in-person step.
How to Apply UK Visa Nigeria?
- Check Eligibility and Apply Online: Go to the official gov.uk website, select the correct visa, and fill in the application form accurately and completely.
- Pay Application Fees and IHS: Pay the required visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), if applicable, online. This generates your unique GWF reference number.
- Book Your Appointment: You will be directed to the TLScontact website to choose a date and time for your appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Nigeria.
- Prepare and Upload Documents: Gather all required supporting evidence. You should upload these documents online before your appointment or pay for the VAC to scan them for you.
- Attend Biometrics Appointment: Attend the VAC in person to submit your fingerprints and photograph (UK visa biometric enrolment Nigeria). This formally submits your application to UKVI.
- Receive Your Decision: UKVI processes your application and contacts the VAC when a decision is made. You can then collect your passport.
UK Visa Document Requirements
The required documents prove your identity, financial ability, and honest intentions. Any document not in English must have a certified English translation.

UK Visa Processing Times and Priority Services
Processing times start from the day you attend your VAC appointment.
What are the Home Office visa processing times for Nigeria?
| Visa Category | Standard Service Target Time |
|---|---|
| Visit, Student, and Work Visas (Non-Settlement) | 3 weeks (15 working days) |
| Family Visas (Spouse/Partner, Settlement) | 12 weeks (60 working days) |
- Priority Visa Service (Non-Settlement): Decision typically within 5 working days.
- Super Priority Visa Service: Decision typically by the end of the next working day (availability depends on the centre).
Common Reasons for UK Visa Refusal
Refusals happen when applicants fail to meet the strict Immigration Rules.
- Lack of Genuine Intention (Visitor Visas): Failing to convince the ECO you will return to Nigeria due to weak family, financial, or employment ties.
- Unclear Financial Evidence: Not showing verifiable liquid funds that have been held for the required time (e.g., 28 days for maintenance funds).
- Not Meeting Financial Threshold: For Spouse or Skilled Worker visas, failing to meet the new, higher minimum income requirement.
- Incorrect or Missing Documents: Failing to provide documents exactly as specified on the gov.uk document checklist.
After Receiving Your UK Visa
If successful, you will receive a visa vignette (sticker) in your passport or an eVisa (digital status) notification.
- Check Immediately: Verify that all personal details and the visa's dates are correct. Report any errors immediately.
- Biometric Residence Permit (BRP): If your visa is for over six months, you will receive a 90-day vignette to enter the UK. You must collect your BRP once in the UK.
Switching or Extending Your UK Visa
- Extension: Many long-term visas (Skilled Worker, Student, Spouse) can be extended from within the UK.
- Switching: You cannot generally switch from a Standard Visitor Visa to a long-term visa (like work or family) from within the UK. You must return to Nigeria to apply.
Pathway to Settlement and Citizenship
The long-term goal for many is permanent residence.
- Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR): This is UK permanent residency. It is typically granted after five years of continuous legal stay on an eligible route (e.g., Skilled Worker or Spouse Visa), provided you meet all requirements, including the Life in the UK test.
- British Citizenship: You can usually apply for British citizenship by naturalisation one year after obtaining ILR.
UK Visa Fees and Processing Times
| Service Type | Processing Time Aim (Working Days) | Additional Fee (Approx. GBP) |

| Standard Settlement (Family) | 60 (12 weeks) | £0 |
| Priority Non-Settlement | 5 | £500 |
| Super Priority | 1 (Next working day) | £1,000 |
