Planning for Indefinite Leave to Remain requires understanding the complete financial commitment involved. From application fees and biometric costs to priority processing services, the expenses can quickly add up for families pursuing permanent UK settlement.
Getting Indefinite Leave to Remain represents one of the most significant immigration investments you'll make in the UK. Recent Home Office fees has made financial planning more critical than ever for families pursuing permanent settlement.
This comprehensive guide breaks down every single cost and fee associated with your UK ILR application in 2026, ensuring you can budget accurately and approach your settlement application with confidence.
What is Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)?
Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) is the status granted to migrants who want to live and work indefinitely in the UK. ILR provides lasting security and serves as your gateway to British citizenship.
The benefits extend far beyond just staying in the UK. With ILR, you gain access to public funds, complete freedom in employment choices, and the ability to travel without worrying about maintaining sponsorship or meeting residence requirements for future applications.
Most applicants become eligible after five years of continuous residence on qualifying visas like Skilled Worker or spouse visas. There's also a ten-year route for those with more complex immigration histories.
Once you hold ILR for twelve months, you can apply for British citizenship, making this investment a crucial step toward full integration into UK society.
Who is Eligible to Apply for ILR?
Many visa holders in the UK become eligible for ILR after fulfilling residency requirements. Common routes include:
- Skilled Worker visa holders after typically 5 years.
- Spouse or partner visa holders.
- Long residence applicants (usually after 10 years).
- Other visa categories, such as investors, applicants on the 14-year route, or former refugees.
ILR effectively stabilises your immigration status, giving rights similar to those of British citizens, except voting and passport privileges.
What Are the ILR Costs/Fees in 2026?
The ILR application fee sets the foundational cost for your settlement journey.
| Fee Component | Cost Per Person |
|---|---|
| ILR Application Fee | £3,029 |
| Biometric Enrollment | £19.20 |
| Priority Service | £500 |
| Super Priority Service | £1,000 |
Key points about these fees:
- Every family member pays individually, including children
- Immigration Health Surcharge doesn't apply to ILR applications
- All fees except biometrics are paid during online submission
No Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)
One common point of confusion is the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).
You do not need to pay the IHS when applying for ILR. This surcharge is only for temporary visa applications. As an ILR applicant, you are being granted permanent settlement, giving you unrestricted access to the NHS.
The Mandatory Biometric Enrolment Fee
In addition to the main application fee, every applicant must pay a biometric enrolment fee of £19.20.
This fee covers the cost of attending an appointment at a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS) centre to have your fingerprints and a digital photograph taken. This information is used to produce your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), your official proof of ILR status.
How does ILR lead to British Citizenship?
ILR is the essential steppingstone to becoming a British citizen. In most cases, you must hold ILR for at least 12 months before you can apply for naturalisation. Planning for this next stage is crucial, and understanding the British citizenship fees & process will help you budget for your entire journey to full citizenship.
Step-by-Step ILR Fee Payment Process
Understanding the payment sequence prevents costly mistakes that can delay or invalidate applications.
Application preparation stage: Gather all required documents and complete your online application form before proceeding to payment. Ensure your payment card belongs to the main applicant to avoid automatic rejection.
Online fee payment: Pay all application fees simultaneously during submission. The system requires immediate payment to proceed, so ensure sufficient funds are available for your entire family.
Biometric appointment scheduling: After successful payment, book UKVCAS appointments for all applicants. The £19.20 biometric fee is collected separately at each appointment.
Document submission: Upload supporting documents and attend scheduled appointments as required. Some applications may require additional evidence submission later in the process.
Common mistakes include using unauthorised payment methods, insufficient funds for biometric fees, or delays between payment and document submission that can affect application validity.
Common reasons for ILR refusal
- Exceeding 180-day annual absence limits during qualifying periods
- Insufficient English language evidence or invalid test certificates
- Gaps in continuous residence documentation
- Inadequate supporting evidence for relationship or employment claims
Can ILR Fees Be Refunded or Waived?
The Home Office's policies on refunds and waivers are rigid and offer very little flexibility. It’s essential to understand this to manage your financial risk.
What is UKVI's ILR Fee Refund Policy?
The most critical point to remember is this: the ILR application fee is not refundable if your application is refused.
If your application is rejected because you failed to meet the eligibility criteria, made a mistake, or omitted crucial evidence, you will lose the entire fee of over £3,000 per person. This is why professional guidance is not just a service, but a financial safeguard.
An ILR fee refund is only considered in extremely limited situations:
- You formally withdraw your application before attending your biometric appointment.
- The Home Office rejects your application as "invalid" due to a technical error (like paying the wrong fee amount) before it is considered.
- A technical glitch caused you to be overcharged.
Are Fee Waivers a Possibility for ILR?
Fee waivers for settlement applications are exceptionally rare. While our UK visa fee waiver guide is a useful resource for other immigration routes, the threshold for ILR is almost insurmountably high.
A waiver is generally only considered for applicants on a human rights route who can provide extensive, compelling evidence of destitution. For the vast majority of applicants on work, family, or long residence routes, a fee waiver is not a realistic option.
Conclusion:
The cost of an ILR application in 2026 is a significant investment, with the standard fee for a single person standing at £3,048.20. When you add dependants and optional priority services, the total can quickly escalate.
