Introduction
Thinking about expanding your overseas business into the UK?
The UK Expansion Worker visa might be your way. The UK Expansion Worker visa is a key route for businesses expanding their operations into the UK for the first time. It enables senior managers or specialist employees from overseas businesses to establish a UK branch with ease.
This guide covers everything you need to know about eligibility, application steps, costs, and how to avoid common pitfalls, strictly aligned with UK government regulations. Whether you're a business owner or an employee, understanding this visa's specifics can ensure a smooth transition and compliance with British immigration law.
What is the UK Expansion Worker Visa?
The UK Expansion Worker visa is a temporary visa route designed specifically for overseas businesses wanting to establish their first UK presence. It's part of the Global Business Mobility (GBM) programme, which replaced older visa categories in 2026.
The visa allows eligible overseas businesses to deploy senior managers or specialist employees to the UK to set up a branch or subsidiary. This is different from hiring new staff in the UK; it's about transferring proven team members from your overseas operation to lead your UK expansion.
Importantly, this route only works if your business hasn't already started trading in the UK.
Who Can Apply for a UK Expansion Worker Visa?
Eligibility for this route is a two-part test. The Home Office must be satisfied with the credentials of both the applicant (the employee) and, more importantly, the sponsoring company (the overseas business).
Eligibility Criteria for Applicants
Applicants must:
- Have a valid certificate of sponsorship (CoS) from their UK sponsor (employer)
- Have worked for the overseas employer for at least 12 months unless:
- They earn over £73,900 annually, or
- They are Japanese nationals working for expanding Japanese companies in the UK, or
- They are nationals or permanent residents of Australia working for Australian companies expanding in the UK
- Do a job on the list of eligible occupations (with a recognised 4-digit occupation code)
- Meet the minimum salary requirements: at least £52,500 per year or the going rate for their occupation, whichever is higher
- Work the required minimum number of hours under UK rules
Eligibility Criteria for the Sponsor
The UK sponsor must:
- Have a valid sponsor licence for the Expansion Worker route
- Issue a certificate of sponsorship to the applicant
- Ensure jobs comply with the salary and working hours requirements according to UK immigration rules
If the business does not yet have a sponsor licence, they must apply for one before issuing a CoS.
How to Apply for a UK Expansion Worker Visa?
Step-by-Step Application Process
Step 1: Sponsor Licence Application
The UK business must obtain a sponsor licence from the UK Home Office for the Expansion Worker visa. This involves proving eligibility, implementing compliance measures, and paying the application fee.
Step 2: Certificate of Sponsorship Issuance
Once the licence is granted, the sponsor can assign a CoS to the employee. The CoS is an electronic record with details about the job and start date.
Step 3: Visa Application Submission
The employee applies online for the visa using the CoS reference number, usually up to 3 months before their job start date. They must provide identity documents, proof of savings, and pay the visa application fees and healthcare surcharge.
Where to apply: Applications must be made online through the official UK Visas and Immigration portal. You cannot apply by post or through paper forms.
Applying from outside vs. inside the UK:
- From outside the UK: You'll apply for "entry clearance." Processing typically takes 3 weeks.
- Already in the UK (switching or extending): You'll apply for "leave to remain." Processing typically takes 8 weeks.
If you need a faster decision, UK Visas and Immigration offers priority processing (usually 5 working days) for an additional fee.
Processing Times: What to Expect
Understanding realistic timelines helps you plan your UK expansion strategy.
Sponsor licence approval: 4-8 weeks (occasionally longer for complex cases)
Certificate of Sponsorship issuance: Immediate (once your licence is approved, you can issue CoS within hours)
Entry clearance (applying from outside UK):
- Standard: 3 weeks
- Priority: 5 working days (additional fee applies)
Leave to remain (applying from inside UK):
- Standard: 8 weeks
- Priority: 5 working days (additional fee applies)

UK Expansion Worker Visa Costs in 2026
Understanding the full financial picture helps you budget for your expansion. Costs include application fees, healthcare charges, and potential additional expenses.
Application and Visa Fees
Visa application fee: £719 per person
This covers the cost of processing your expansion worker visa application. It's a one-off fee paid during your initial application.
Priority processing fee: £1,500 per person (optional)
If you can't wait 3-8 weeks for a decision, you can pay extra for priority processing. With priority processing, you'll typically receive a decision within 5 working days. This is particularly useful if you need to start work on a specific date.
Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)
Mandatory for all visa applicants: £1,035 per year of visa validity
This is a substantial cost that many people overlook. If you're getting a two-year visa, you'll pay approximately £2,070 for healthcare access. This covers:
- Access to NHS (National Health Service) hospital treatment
- Emergency GP services
- Prescription charges at standard rates
Note: The IHS rate is set by the government and can change annually. Always check the latest rates on the official UK government website.
Personal Savings Requirement
If applying from outside the UK or within your first 12 months in the UK: You must prove personal savings of £1,270 (unless your sponsor certifies maintenance)
This is not a fee you pay; it's money you need to have in a bank account. You must hold this for 28 consecutive days, with the end date falling within 31 days of your application submission.
If your sponsor covers maintenance: You don't need to meet the £1,270 savings requirement, as your employer takes financial responsibility.
Dependant Costs
If your partner and children are joining, you in the UK:
- Each dependant pays the visa application fee (£719)
- Each dependant pays the Immigration Health Surcharge (£1,035 per year)
- Each dependant must meet the financial requirement (£1,270) or be covered by sponsor maintenance
Visa Duration and How to Extend Expansion Worker Visa
How long you can stay, and your extension options are crucial for long-term UK planning.
Initial Visa Duration
Your initial UK Expansion Worker visa is granted for whichever is shorter of:
- 12 months from your job start date (listed on your Certificate of Sponsorship), or
- 14 days after your job end date on the Certificate of Sponsorship
In practise, most people receive a one-year visa initially.
The Maximum Two-Year Limit
You can extend your expansion worker visa once, for a further 12 months. This means the absolute maximum time you can spend on this route is two continuous years.
Extension process:
- Apply to extend before your current visa expires
- Your employer must issue a new Certificate of Sponsorship
- You submit your extension application online (same process as the initial application)
- Processing typically takes 8 weeks if you're in the UK
Extension costs: You'll pay the visa application fee again (£719) plus another year of Immigration Health Surcharge (£1,035).
The Cumulative Five-Year Limit
Here's a crucial restriction many people miss: there's a maximum of five years in any six-year period across multiple Global Business Mobility routes.
This means if you've previously spent time in the UK on any of these routes, that time counts toward your five-year limit:
- UK Expansion Worker visa (current route)
- Senior or Specialist Worker visa
- Secondment Worker visa
- Graduate Trainee visa (Global Business Mobility)
- Service Supplier visa
- Intra-company Transfer visa
- Intra-company Graduate Trainee visa

Understanding why applications are refused helps you build a strong application from the start.
- UKVI doesn't believe your business is genuinely expanding to the UK.
- Your company hasn't demonstrated a genuine UK presence.
- Your overseas business doesn't meet sponsor licence requirements.
- The individual doesn't meet personal eligibility criteria.
- Missing or insufficient supporting documents.
- The applicant hasn't scored the required 60 points.
- You can't prove sufficient personal savings.
- You haven't provided the required health evidence or security issues.
