The UK offers a unique pathway for entrepreneurs and highly skilled individuals to move to the country by effectively employing themselves through their own UK company. This strategy, known as self-sponsorship, uses the established Skilled Worker visa route.
This comprehensive guide breaks down the process, requirements, and compliance duties for securing a UK self-sponsorship visa in 2026, following the latest Home Office and UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) rules.
What is Self-Sponsorship in the UK?
UK Self-sponsorship is an immigration strategy where a foreign national establishes or acquires a UK company, and that company applies a Sponsor Licence to legally employ (sponsor) the individual under the Skilled Worker visa route.
This route is highly appealing as it allows you to control both your UK business and your own immigration status. It is a legitimate and highly regulated route for entrepreneurs to work in the UK.
- There is no official 'Self-Sponsorship Visa. You apply for a Skilled Worker visa after your UK company obtains a Sponsor Licence and assigns you a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS).
- The route is suitable for those with sufficient funds and a genuine, viable business idea that requires a highly skilled role, such as a director or specialist manager.
Which Visa Routes Allow Self-Sponsorship?
The primary and most common route for self-sponsorship is the Skilled Worker visa. This route has replaced the old Tier 2 (General) visa and is the backbone of the self-sponsorship process.
While other routes like the Innovator Founder visa are for entrepreneurs, they involve an endorsement body, whereas the self-sponsorship pathway is more direct for those willing to meet the high skill and salary thresholds.
| Feature | Self-Sponsorship (Skilled Worker Route) | Innovator Founder Visa |
|---|---|---|
| Visa Type Used | Skilled Worker Visa | Innovator Founder Visa |
| Endorsement Required | No endorsement needed. | Yes, from an approved endorsing body. |
| Minimum Investment | No formal minimum investment. Must have capital to run business and pay salary. | No minimum investment, but business must be 'innovative, viable, and scalable.' |
| Path to ILR | Yes, typically after 5 years. | Yes, typically after 3 years. |
| Key Hurdle | Obtaining Sponsor Licence & meeting high salary/skill requirements. | Securing endorsement & proving genuine innovation/scalability. |
Who Can Apply for a UK Self Sponsorship Visa?
Anyone who has the resources and expertise to establish a genuine, trading UK business and can demonstrate that they are filling a genuine vacancy that meets the UKVI's strict criteria can apply.
You are generally a good candidate if you:
- Have a clear, genuine, and viable plan to establish a UK business.
- Have the funds to cover company setup, operating costs, and the mandatory high minimum salary.
- Can demonstrate relevant experience in the field of the job you will be sponsoring yourself for.
- Can meet the English language requirement (CEFR Level B1).
Applying for a Sponsor Licence: Step-by-Step Licence Application Process
The first and most complex step is having your UK company apply for a Sponsor Licence. This grants your company the legal right to issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) UK to a migrant worker—which will be you.
1. Establish a UK Company: Register a business (usually a private limited company) with Companies House and open a corporate bank account.
2. Appoint Key Personnel: Your company must nominate three roles:
- Authorising Officer (AO): The most senior person responsible for the sponsorship activities. This is often the applicant/business owner.
- Key Contact: The main point of contact for UKVI.
- Level 1 User: Manages the day-to-day use of the Sponsor Management System (SMS).
3. Prepare Supporting Documents:
Gather the mandatory and supporting documents to prove your business is genuine and actively trading in the UK. Submit Online Application: Complete the application on the Home Office's online portal and pay the relevant fee.
4. Submit Online Application: Complete the application on the Home Office's online portal and pay the relevant fee.
Sponsor Licence Fees:
| Company Size | Sponsor Licence Fee (Worker route) |
|---|---|
| Small Sponsor / Charity | £536 |
| Large Sponsor | £1,476 |
Self Sponsorship Visa Requirements
Once your company has a Sponsor Licence, the next step is the individual visa application. You must meet all the criteria for a Skilled Worker visa.
1. Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)
Your company must assign you a Defined or Undefined Certificate of Sponsorship UK (CoS). This digital certificate confirms the job details.
- Crucial Compliance Point: The CoS must clearly state the job title, salary, and working hours, and these must align with your business plan and UKVI rules.
2. Skill Level Requirement
The job you sponsor yourself for must be skilled to at least RQF level 6 (degree level or equivalent) or be on the Immigration Salary List 2026.
- Note: Jobs at RQF level 3-5 (A-level equivalent) are only eligible if they are listed on the Immigration Salary List (ISL) and meet specific criteria.
3. Minimum Salary Threshold
The salary you are paid must be the highest of three benchmarks:
- The general salary threshold (expected to be £41,700 from July).
- The 'going rate' for the specific occupation code (Standard Occupational Classification - SOC 2020).
- The relevant discounted rate if the role is on the Immigration Salary List 2026 or you qualify as a 'new entrant'.
| Option | Minimum Annual Salary (from July) | Hourly Rate (Min) |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Rate | £41,700 | £17.13 |
| ISL Role Rate | £33,400 | £17.13 |
Self-sponsoring applicants usually apply under the Standard Rate, meaning the higher salary is a significant hurdle.
4. English Language Requirement
You must prove English language ability at a minimum of CEFR Level B1. This can be met by:
- Passing an approved English language test.
- Having a degree taught in English.
- Being a national of a majority English-speaking country.
5. Maintenance Funds
You must show you have enough money to support yourself in the UK, which is typically £1,270 held in your bank account for 28 consecutive days before applying. Alternatively, your sponsoring company can certify your maintenance on the CoS.
Documents Needed for Self-Sponsorship
Preparation of documentation is critical to avoid delays or worse, a Self Sponsorship Refusal. All documents must be original or certified copies and, if not in English, must have a certified translation.
For the Sponsor Licence Application (Company)
- Certificate of Incorporation and VAT registration (if applicable).
- Proof of genuine trading presence (e.g., commercial lease agreement, utility bills).
- UK Corporate Bank Statement (usually one month's statement).
- Employer’s Liability Insurance certificate (minimum £5 million cover).
- HMRC registration documents (e.g., PAYE/Account Office Reference Letter).
- Detailed organisation chart showing Key Personnel.
For the Skilled Worker Visa Application (Individual)
- Valid Passport and previous passports.
- The unique Certificate of Sponsorship UK reference number.
- Proof of English language ability (e.g., test certificate).
- Proof of Maintenance Funds (bank statements) or sponsor certification.
- Criminal record certificate (if applicable to the job role).
- Tuberculosis (TB) certificate (if applying from a required country).
ILR Eligibility via Self Sponsorship
The self-sponsorship route under the Skilled Worker visa provides a clear pathway to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) also known as settlement or permanent residency.
You can apply for ILR after completing five continuous years in the UK on the Skilled Worker visa, provided you meet specific requirements:
- Continuous Residence: You must not have spent more than 180 days outside the UK in any 12-month period.
- Continued Employment: You must still be employed in the sponsored role and meet the minimum salary requirements at the time of application.
- Knowledge of Life in the UK: Passing the Life in the UK Test and holding a B1 level English qualification.
Common Reasons for Self Sponsorship Refusals
The Home Office is particularly vigilant with self-sponsorship applications to prevent abuse of the system. Refusals often stem from a failure to demonstrate genuine intent or compliance.
- The 'Genuine Vacancy' Test Failure: The most common reason. If the Home Office believes the job was created only for the visa, they will refuse the application.
- Inadequate Business Viability: A weak business plan or insufficient capital to pay the mandatory salary and operational costs.
- Breach of Sponsorship Duties: Failure to maintain proper records, report changes (e.g., change of address), or pay the correct salary as stated on the CoS.
- Key Personnel Issues: The Authorising Officer or Level 1 User is deemed unsuitable or unreliable by the Home Office.
