Planning a trip to the UK? Whether you're visiting family, exploring historic castles, or attending business meetings, understanding the UK's visitor visa requirements is crucial for a successful journey. Visitors make up the largest percentage of people entering the UK, and with proper preparation, you can join them without visa complications.
This comprehensive guide covers everything you need to know about applying for a Standard Visitor Visa UK, from eligibility requirements to avoiding common rejection reasons.
What is a UK Standard Visitor Visa?
A visit visa allows a person to visit the United Kingdom on a temporary basis, usually for up to six months at a time. The Standard Visitor route is designed for people who want to visit the UK for a temporary period for purposes such as tourism, visiting friends or family, carrying out business activities, or undertaking short courses of study.
The Standard Visitor Visa covers multiple visit purposes:
- Tourism and leisure - Sightseeing, holidays, cultural events, recreation
- Family and friends visits - Spending time with relatives or friends in the UK
- Business activities - Meetings, conferences, training (no paid employment)
- Short-term medical treatment - Private medical consultations or procedures
- Short-term study - Courses up to 6 months with accredited institutions
Unlike other UK visas, the Standard Visitor Visa doesn't allow you to work (except specific permitted paid engagements), study long-term, or access public funds. Each Visitor must meet the requirements of the Visitor route, even if they are travelling as, for example, a family group, a tour group or a school party.
Who Needs a Standard Visitor Visa for the UK?
Whether you need a visa depends on your nationality. Visa nationals are those who are required to apply for and obtain entry clearance as a visitor before arriving in the UK, otherwise they will automatically be refused entry.
Visa nationals (require advance visa application):
- India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal
- China, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia
- Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Egypt
- Turkey, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova
- Most Middle Eastern and African nations
Non-visa nationals (can apply for permission to enter on arrival):
- EU countries, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand
- Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia
- Most South American countries
Important: Non-visa nationals must obtain electronic travel authorisation prior to travelling to the UK. Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is 'digital permission to travel' - similar to the US ESTA system.
Use the official UK government's "Check if you need a UK visa" tool on gov.uk to confirm your requirements based on nationality and visit purpose.
Eligibility Criteria: Who Can Apply?
All visitors must meet the fundamental 'genuine visitor' requirement. A genuine visitor is one who will leave the UK at the end of their visit; will not live in the UK for extended periods through frequent or successive visits, or make the UK their main home; is genuinely seeking entry for a permitted purpose; will not undertake prohibited activities; and must have sufficient funds to cover all reasonable costs without working or accessing public funds.
Core eligibility requirements:
Intention to leave - You must demonstrate compelling reasons to return to your home country, such as employment, family responsibilities, property ownership, or ongoing education.
Sufficient funds - Must have sufficient funds to cover all reasonable costs in relation to their visit without working or accessing public funds, including the cost of the return or onward journey, any costs relating to their dependants, and the cost of planned activities.
Genuine purpose - Your visit reason must align with permitted activities under visitor rules and be supported by evidence.
No prohibited intentions - You cannot intend to work illegally, study long-term, access free medical treatment, or establish residence.
Third-party sponsorship: The funds can be provided by a third party — often referred to as a sponsor — if the sponsor has a genuine professional or personal relationship with the visitor, is in the UK lawfully, and can and will provide support for the intended duration of the visitor's stay.
Categories of UK Visitor Visas
The UK immigration rules recognise four main visitor categories, each with specific requirements:
Standard Visitor Visa
Most common category covering tourism, family visits, business activities, and short-term study. Includes several subcategories with additional requirements:
Academic visitors (12-month visa) - For highly qualified academics undertaking formal exchange arrangements, sabbatical research, or eminent senior doctors/dentists participating in research and teaching.
Private medical treatment visitors (11-month visa) - Must arrange treatment in advance with detailed medical letters confirming the condition, costs, duration, and treatment location.
Organ donation visitors - Must provide medical confirmation of donor matching and letters from NHS Trust teams or UK registered medical practitioners.
Study visitors (6 months) - Must be accepted by accredited institutions for courses lasting no longer than 6 months, including medical electives and research programmes.
Marriage/Civil Partnership Visitor Visa
For visitors intending to marry or form civil partnerships in the UK and then leave. It is not to be confused with a fiancé(e) visa, which is for someone who wants to come to the UK to get married and then extend their stay. Applicants must be 18 or over and demonstrate that the marriage/partnership is not a sham.
Transit Visitor Visa
For travelers passing through the UK to reach other destinations. There are two types: transiting landside (entering UK border control) and transiting airside (remaining in international zones). Transit visitors must complete their journey within 48 hours.
Diplomatic Visa Arrangement Visitor Visa
For nationals of China, Indonesia, South Africa, Turkey and Vietnam who hold diplomatic passports, introduced in March 2025. Valid for 2 years with multiple 6-month visits, requiring Note Verbale from their government.

What Can and Cannot Visitors Do?
The rules on what visitors can and cannot do are complex. Appendix Visitor: Permitted Activities lists the activities that visitors are allowed to undertake, while Appendix V contains prohibited activities.
Prohibited Activities:
A visitor must not intend to work in the UK unless expressly allowed by the permitted activities, including taking employment, doing work for UK organisations, establishing businesses, doing work placements, direct selling, or providing goods and services.
Cannot do:
- Take paid employment or run businesses
- Study for more than 6 months
- Access free NHS medical treatment
- Marry/form civil partnerships (without appropriate visa)
- Live in UK through frequent visits
Permitted Activities:
Working remotely from the UK during a visit is now listed in Appendix Visitor: Permitted Activities under 'general business activities' as of 31 January 2024, as long as it is not the primary purpose of the visit.
Can do:
- Tourism and leisure activities
- Attend business meetings and conferences
- Undertake permitted paid engagements (specific categories)
- Short-term study with accredited institutions
- Private medical treatment
- Volunteer for registered charities
Reasons for Visitor Visa Rejection and How to Avoid Them
Understanding rejection patterns helps improve application success:
Financial inadequacy - Insufficient funds, irregular income patterns, or unexplained large deposits close to application dates.
Weak home country ties - Inability to demonstrate compelling reasons to return, such as stable employment, family responsibilities, or property ownership.
Documentation issues - False representations, false documents or information submitted, or relevant facts not disclosed lead to refusals and potential future bans.
Unclear visit purpose - Vague travel plans, unrealistic itineraries, or inconsistent information about visit intentions.
Previous immigration violations - Visitors who fail to comply with reasonable requirements, produce proper travel documents, or have changes in circumstances since entry clearance was granted face difficulties.
Extending Your Visitor Visa
It is possible for a visitor to extend their stay only in very limited circumstances under the rules.
Permitted extensions:
- Standard/Marriage visitors granted less than 6 months: can extend to total 6 months
- Medical treatment visitors: additional 6 months for continued treatment
- Academic visitors: can extend to total 12 months for specific activities
- Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board test candidates: up to 6 months for resits
There is no provision in the rules for extensions of stay beyond these limits.
Visa Cancellation Circumstances
Visit visas can be cancelled in certain circumstances. Some circumstances mean a person's visitor visa 'must' be cancelled, whereas other circumstances mean a person's visa 'may' be cancelled.
Mandatory cancellation:
- Subject to exclusion or deportation orders
- Presence not conducive to public good
- Criminal convictions with 12+ months custodial sentences
Discretionary cancellation:
- Criminal convictions under 12 months
- Sham marriages or civil partnerships
- False representations or document fraud
- Failure to comply with reasonable requirements
